In the original video of “Losing my Religion” they use the technique of quick white flashes which represent the lack of stability created from the loss of faith. We intend using a similar idea in our video, which will not only relate to the original, but also to represent the lack of stability and state of disequilibrium. We will be using this effect in some of the transitions to give extra effect to each transition. The original video also contains a lot of blurred effects and changes in the depth of field which shows a distorted vision and an unrevealed truth. We also wish to use this technique within our video so that we are linking with the original video and so we can represent distortion, confusion and stress. We will use this effect when we have our close up shots to deliberately distort a characters face to show that life can be so stressful and depressing it becomes blurred and distorted. Our video will contain a lot of effects such as blurred depth of field and quick white flash transitions to create lots of distortion and confusion. This will keep the audience puzzled and allow them to create a story and representation for themselves and therefore making the video full of writerly content instead of readerly.
Another effect used a lot in the original video of “Losing my Religion” is the use of different types of lighting, such as the spotlight. This is the type of lighting that is used the most in the video and is used to create priority amongst the characters and show who the audience should be looking at. Our video will be using lighting effects but we won’t be using the spotlight because this would make the video too readerley, so instead we will use lighting effects to represent the dark and depressing feelings that the characters are showing. An Omni light would be ideal for use as the singular light shining on a specific area creating many different forms of representations that the audience can then decipher.
The teShadowing and vignettes are also used frequently to represent a possible enclosing darkness, which is the truth, as the video appears to show how science and time is killing people’s deepest beliefs. So the dark vignette is used to represent that science is constantly revealing more and more facts that are forcing people to lose their faith and beliefs and this s seen as closing darkness form the vignette. Like the original we will be using darkened effects to represent a lose of faith except we will be using a vignette that gradually increases in size which could host a lot of different type of representations, we may also start the video in colour and then proceed to slowly de-saturate the scenes again showing lots of different types representations that the audience can decipher themselves
Finally we are using multiple slow-mo shots such as the falling of the ring and the shattering of the photo frame as these will not only show multiple representations but it will also allow the scene to last slightly longer than the other shots allowing them to be slightly shortened for the quick multiple flash transitional effects.
