As a part of my research towards making our music video, I am going to look at three music videos that will give us different ideas which we can incorporate into our music video ideas. Firstly, I analysed the music video of ‘Rooftops’ by Lostprophets for its narrative structure. Secondly, I analysed the music videos of ‘In The End’ by Linkin Park and ‘Bring me to Life’ by Evanescence for the Mise-en-scene in the video. Then I analysed the music video of ‘Everybody Hurts’ by R.E.M. to see the techniques used in other videos by the band.
Firstly, the video of ‘Rooftops’ by Lostprophets has a narrative structure that shows us three different narratives. They all start in disequilibrium with all of their problems having some sort of relation with each other. They all have the problem of not fitting into society as they are of a different culture; in this case, they are subcultural characters. This is how we are going to structure our music video as we intend to have three different scenarios. Although all of the characters have dissimilar problems, they all relate to the theme of the song which is that the character involved is losing their faith in something. We are using the three narratives to represent the fact that there are so many different ways in which you can lose your faith in something, but because there are so many, it enhances the effect given from them.
After that, I analysed the videos of ‘In The End’ by Linkin Park and ‘Bring Me To Life’ by Evanescence. In ‘In The End’, the Mise-en-scene is very dark and derelict as it shows them in a very barren wasteland. This is representative of the idea that we wish to use as is could represent being lost and unsure of what is happening, which could relate to the idea of losing your religion or faith. In ‘Bring Me To Life’ by Evanescence, there is a clip where there is a masked party, with all happy masks, however, the people underneath all of the masks are all very unhappy and upset. We intend to use this idea for our music video as we can incorporate the idea into the marriage sequence in the form of a veil over the woman’s face so her tearful face is disguised. Also in this music video the mise-en-scene is very dark and mysterious, this will fit in nicely with the writerley aspect of our video idea as it shows the mystery of the narrative.
Finally, I have analysed the music video of ‘Everybody Hurts’ by R.E.M. so that I can see what sort of techniques are used in other videos by the same artist. There are a few similarities I have found in the two videos from R.E.M. Firstly, the feelings and moods that are represented in the video are very solemn and sad. There are people who are unhappy and have problems, and so we shall incorporate these feelings and moods into our music video to show that we are using their techniques in our video. Also, I have found that the narrative of the video relates very closely to the idea behind the song. For example, the video in ‘Losing My Religion’ sticks very closely to the idea of losing faith, even though very abstractly, and in ‘Everybody Hurts’ it represents the idea that society has problems and so the people in society ‘hurt’. We shall use this technique in our video as we are going to keep very closely with the idea of losing faith throughout the three narratives in our video.
