Action Plan
This is our action plan after we have received feedback from our mock up of the digipack and the one page poster for our music video.
Firstly, we need to make a few altercations to a few images, which will include editing some of the effects. Firstly, the poster:
- The jigsaw needs to look more like a jigsaw, so we will brighten the background to make it stand out more.
- Possibly change the advert so that the jigsaw is something else, something better
- Change the text on the poster to link to the themes.
- Remove the treble clef
- Remove red spot.
Secondly, the digipack:
- Redo front cover – add a jigsaw style picture and needs brightening
- Add track list on the back
- Possibly add another image of loss of front cover e.g. tear
- Redo smudged equations, name of song along with another image of loss
- Mid panels own images, get the lighting parallel to one another
- Lighten images slightly

Coldplay Album Advert Analysis
I think that the imagery in this advert is the most interesting because of the composition and what is included in the shot. Firstly, we see the lead singer of the group standing in what looks to be an alley way, and it seems very dark and cold because of the way he has fastened his jacket right up. The image is obviously lit by a yellow street lamp, which we can see through the yellow tint on the image, which is used to represent the name of the single ‘Sparks’. This is also used to add a very mysterious mood to the advert because this is the mood of the single, which is a very mellowing mood. Also there is a man standing in the background of the image, facing the other direction and so not paying attention to the lead singer. I think that this is also a representation of the moods within the song because it is showing loneliness and sorrow because the theme of this song is about being alone. I feel that this image represents this mood because it shows the main attraction in the image as being very alone, and the only other person on the image is facing away and not interested, therefore enhancing the feelings of loneliness for the viewer. I think that, in terms of Barthes’ theory, this is a very writerley text because the meaning behind it is not particularly apparent as to how the feelings are brought to the viewer, therefore giving the viewer the opportunity to incorporate their own ideas, feelings and experiences into this advert and make it personal, which in turn, will make it more appealing to a wider audience. I think that this is the sort of technique that I think we should be using for our advert because we are aiming to get these writerley feelings across to the viewer and so we will need to make sure that we use techniques that will make the viewer think about the advert for themselves, rather than give them the ideas so they can relate to it more easily.
Eminem Album Advert Analysis – Not Afraid (Single)
This is an advert from Eminem’s 2008 single of ‘Not Afraid’. The song relates to newfound courage and confidence, albeit facing struggles and eventually jumping off a ledge. This is representative in the title of the single’s poster because the name of the song relates to the ideas in the song of gaining confidence and literally not being afraid of anything. However, the lyrics show us a slightly different insight because it says about being pushed so far that you eventually go over the edge. I think that this is representative in the image on the poster because it is showing the rapper mimicking a gun to the camera, which shows the limit to which he been pushed to. However, I also think that the mimicking of this gun also represents the courage and confidence represented because this hand gesture shows him almost making fun of the viewer because it is just a playful motion rather than a harmful or offensive gesture. I think that this gives the image a lot of levels because on the one hand you could interpret that it is bad as he has been pushed so far to make this gesture, but I also feel that it is not harmful as this gesture could also be used as just a playful sign.
There is not wide gamut of colours in this poster, but I feel that the colours, which are in it, are very bold and contrast with other. For example, the two main colours are black and white, which makes up for his clothes, some of the text and the background. These are very plain colours and I feel that these were used to represent the contrast in feelings within the song. On the one hand he feels low and down, which is represented by the black, but he also has newfound confidence, which is represented by the white colours. There are also very slight hinted highlights of other colours, for example, the red highlights in the jacket and I feel that this reflects Eminem’s characteristics because he is a reformed man after several problems in his history, yet he still has these bad traits running through him, which is represented through these red streaks. There is also a little bit of blue text, featuring the rapper’s name under the huge single title, but it is very small compared. I think that this is because they want the viewer to be able to distinguish the name because of the different colour; however, the name of the single is the main focus because the image of Eminem and the single title is enough to sell the product because Eminem is a name everyone knows.

Linkin Park Album Advert Analysis
This is the Linkin Park Album Promotional Poster, which they brought out for the release of their ‘Minutes To Minutes’ album. It is a very simple poster as there are only two basic colours and very little happening in the middle of the poster. This shows the awareness of space in the poster, which gives the impression that this album is very dark and about emptiness and other similar emotions as this is the theme of the album. The use of space could also be an intertextual reference to a famous photographer called Shōji Ueda who used space throughout his photographs to represent hollowness and emptiness, which is the theme of the album. I think that this is the sort of technique that we should use for our advert because I think the ideas and themes are very similar and so I think that the use of simplicity and space in our advert will add meaning to the album and promote the ideas of emptiness and the other emotions in our music video.
The colours that are shown in this poster are extremely basic and a little dull because of the lack of colour. However, the fact that there is so little makes the poster look more derelict, abstract and dramatic. The lack of colour gets the viewers attention and so they will be more likely to be thinking of the meaning rather than just seeing what the image looks like. This is a theory of Roland Barthes’ who said that there are only readerley and writerley texts, one, which is given to the audience to read, and one for the audience to interpret for their own. There is also the fact that the colours contrast with each other; as black and white are opposite colours so each is defined into even greater detail. This is a very writerley advert to use because it is not giving the audience a clear indication as to what the album’s theme is and it is making them think about it for themselves, making it a more attractive advert. This is an idea that I think we should use for our album advert because this is the sort of technique we have used for our music video, so it would be good to keep the writerley theme running throughout the project and also because of continuity.

This is supposedly representing the emptiness and also showing a look of mystery in the advert because the silhouetted presence is taking away our view of the figures. This is to represent a countdown of something, which could be to the end of something, which could relate to the location as an almost post-apocalyptic setting. This could also be shown in the directions that the men are looking because it is as if they are lost and so have not got any hope, hence looking into the distance for help, but it seems hopeless. The advert does not use the golden ratio to grab the attention of the audience, but it does however use the rule of thirds as all of the men and text are in the bottom third, with the title in the top third, leaving the middle third completely empty. This is a good technique to use because it grabs the attention of the audience and therefore they will be more likely to continue to look at the advert. I think that we will use something similar with our advert because I think using compositional techniques is a good way of grabbing the audience’s attention.
