Band Research

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed 1980 and they were one of the first popular alternative rock bands. R.E.M. released its first single, "Radio Free Europe", in 1981 followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982. In 1983, they released their critically acclaimed debut album, Murmur, and built their reputation over the next few years. R.E.M. has been around for a number of years and so has gained a massive following from their fans with their stylised music type. From an early age, the group has been very close when they met at their university. In the 1990’s they were viewed as pioneers of the genre from their 2 most successful albums, Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People (1992). This shows the originality of the group as they pioneered with their almost rebellious image, and I feel that when we create our music video, we should try and continue with this theme, using techniques that reflect the genre. For example, we could use writerly techniques, rather than readerly, to make the audience feel there is a lack of order because of the lack of narrative and so reflecting the genre of music.
